HANDS ON EXPERIENCE
Take our history’s glorious past back to your classroom and allow your pupils to build on their new found knowledge and enthusiasm. Our free resources combine The Knights of Malta’s usual dose of fun and glory with national curriculum topics of study. School children will have the opportunity of a ‘hands on’ history experience, allowing you to make the most of your visit to The Knights of Malta in Mdina.
Encounter our guide dressed in period costume which will take students through a journey where they will be able to try on and handle armour along with equipment which has been re-created with the same material which was used originally.
Meet a 15th century Maltese crossbowman at the service of the Capital City, Mdina and relive and hear the incident which occurred at that moment in time concerning the lord Monroy. One can get a glimpse and understand better the way life was in Medieval Malta.
Pupils will be able to touch and wear chain mail coif or a medieval replica steel helmet called ‘sallet’. One can discuss and ask questions about the use of our collection of weapons such as the crossbow, a Knight’s sword and many other everyday items in use including a piece of flint and steel to light a fire.
The arrival of the Napoleon and the French was not a pleasant encounter for the Order’s Maltese Infantry soldiers who were serving in the famous army unit called Regimento di Malta! Oh what stories do they recall! Hear and listen to a sailor relating his journeys and travels on board one of the Orders ships. Another interesting theme is The Grand Harbour Blockade period events which will definitely draw attention to our pupils.
Students will be able to understand better the turbulent times of 18th century Malta. We will guide them through historical accounts but also to the day to day life of the Maltese at the service of the Order. This includes: the drill, barracks life duties, food and pastimes and much much more! All our topics are historically correct and researched information.
Hear all about their stories in our historic building in Mdina!
Each class will enjoy an audio visual presentation/show of the Knights of St.John as early from their origins in Jerusalem to the present day life. Followed by a three dimensional walk through highlighting all the activities of the Knights and Grandmasters in Malta. A new item on our tour is the ‘hands on’ history experience, a novelty for Malta which is truly a fantastic way to teach our pupils all about our Islands golden age!
